Prescription and development of adapted seating devices: learning from practice

Abstract Introduction: A significant part of the professional activity physiotherapists and occupational therapists who assist people with motor disabilities is prescription sometimes construction adapted seats for wheelchairs. This a complex task that involves practice, continued education, material technical resources. These work together to provide patient's access product. Objective: To understand how adaptation wheelchair occur in practice public institution. Methods: study had qualitative approach, applied nature, exploratory objective. We utilized case strategy, conducted through semi-structured interviews, seven professionals from state The data obtained analyzed were professionals’ practical experiences on seat their patients. Results: found divergences between theory context which operate, issues related institution, production capacity adaptations, financial time limitations, custom, lack protocols training area, social patient pressure are some causes these divergencies. Conclusion: On basis, we drew an overview by institution described main elements influence this practice. believe updating professionals, providing more resources, better process planning can reduce theory.
